i love this game so much. the art style is very cool. It took me a little while to get past some things, and what not, but thats just bc im not the brightest :P all up i think this is a great game! cant wait to see more games from you! :3
Hey Hatoge :)! I'm almost at the end of game and I do not know what to do with the "something wrapped up in cloth". Could you please guide me to it? :(
Oh and to the very end [underground/basement], how do I unlock the doors where there are missions running? + I can't move around in train :'(
I really tried my best and I can't get different endings... :'(
Hello :) You might find looking at the walkthrough helpful. Also the door with the machines cannot be unlocked in the free version. (It cant be unlocked by the player in the extended edition either, but there is a scenario in the bonus room that shows the contents of that room)
I wrote a 2 and a half page review of this game that no one can see here bc itch.io is monstrously designed. in essence; its good and you should play it.
I may post my review as a reply but i dont want to destroy the comment section :-// so you’re gonna have to trust me this is worth playing.
Obviously, like all things made by humans, its flawed (i did outline my issues in my review). However, very few games actually keep me until the end, especially ones i play in my browser (which I did for this one). Minor bugs and even more minor syntax issues are really all worth reporting as an overview. Theres a lot more to love in this game then some comments are suggesting. you should just play it, dude. do it. lol
I read your entire review now, and you are totally free to post it as a reply if you want! I thought it was fantastically written and might help some people who had trouble understanding the themes of the game. And about the syntax errors; No, this game wasn't translated from one language to another. I am natively German, which is a language that uses different sentence structures, so I always try to make games in English first and foremost. However, since English is not a language I learned naturally while growing up, I still have a long way to go as a writer. Thank you for all the praise and criticism though, it was very insightful! Hope you have a nice day, and if you do decide to play the extended edition, I would love to hear your thoughts on it. :) (Oh, and lastly, the escape ending isn't the true ending. The extended edition touches more on this. There is a true ending, though. It's the only ending that ends with a question mark)
Hi there!! I was incredibly flattered reading your response! Thank you so much for replying!! Like I said this game rattled in my brain for a bit even after I finished it, so when I say as soon as my year end essay is finished Im gonna snap up the extended version, trust that I mean it haha. Below is a slightly edited version of my review! I really hope that other people who played this game (or deciding if they should play this game) find it useful!
If I could title this review it would be “Exceptional Storytelling, beautiful art, who gave you permission to hurt me”. Unfortunately itch.io isnt so kind as to include that as an option.
I went into this game prepared to be a bitter hater. I’m not a fan of rpg maker for a couple of reasons, and the very sweet style fooled me for quite a bit. I have a ton to say about this game so get ready for a long one.
As a general overview of my opinion, I think this game is magic; Lightning in a bottle type of stuff that’s completely up my alley. The characters are incredibly charming and the pacing in how different aspects of their personalities is shown is very well done. There’s plenty of fun foreshadowing for eggheads like me to obsess over while they surreptitiously search from room to room. The pixel art and illustrations are well made and the simplistic communication style lends to a detachment that makes sense the farther you go into the game. It’s mentioned in the description that some people have issues progressing. I can see why this is the case as much of the gameplay is returning to the same exact few rooms with the same interaction points multiple times over the course of your playthrough. As a person who plays tons of puzzle and exploration based games I’m very much used to the repetition myself, but I can understand why people may find it unengaging. I thought the puzzles themselves were relatively simple and easy to follow, though I’m not sure i would have enjoyed a challenge for this game. Some of the issues people are having is i think perhaps linked to the bird eye view aspect of the design which makes it slightly more difficult to have the spatial awareness required for a couple of the puzzles. Besides a few minor syntax errors, the writing is straightforward and clean without being unproductively off putting. By the time you get to the last few moments of your playthrough, you may just hear your heart beating in your ears. (I certainly did)
Now if i really want to talk about what makes this game special, I have to get into deep, potentially game ‘ruining’ spoilers. So if you haven’t played the whole game (or havent done what I tend to do, which is play it once and watch the rest of the endings on youtube), here is where I’d recommend you do so. I doubt you’ll regret it.
This game is heavy.. heavy heavy.. It implies and talks about aspects of the characters with brevity, but the simple art style and deftly composed music build upon easy-to-follow writing that does pull a few punches, but for a reason. I was ready in particular to dislike Crow. He seemed to fill archetypes I was bored of in other games superficially similar to this one. In any other situation, I wouldn’t care much about characters resembling Crow and Fio, but I CERTAINLY cared for Crow and Fio by the time I finished the game. The fact that not only Fio (who we already knew wasn’t all he seemed) but Crow himself is an iteration was in hindsight so incredibly obvious but cleverly disguised under tropes and regular old video game rules (which is… if that was on purpose which i think it was….wow). There’s that zero escape-esque feel that while you know all the pieces are somewhere around you, it’s hidden frustratingly out of view. Some may find that irritating but I find it engaging.
I do have some minor gripes with design and some choices made. The first few times you go through the evening, the pacing is not as strong, unfortunately. It feels less like you’re excited to look for what’s new, and more just going through the motions knowing eventually someone’s going to die. But it should be encouraging to note that, by the end of the final night, it was leading to something relatively satisfying. There were a few times that I assumed the game was foreshadowing something that never actually paid off (from what I can tell). If I could change one thing about the game i’d frontload a few more implications about the heavy stuff. While I enjoy Crow and Fio’s banter, not a ton of what they discussed in the ‘happy’ part of the game felt very deep (which possibly was intentional).
The controls are typical rpg maker faire, but the larger sprites lend a slowness to Crow’s movement that can be difficult to get used to. However, the somewhat stilted pace to his movements lends to a sense of foreboding that (at least I think) works well. There are limitations to working in this medium and that’s to be expected.
Also, I’m not going to lie, as a gay woman, the game’s themes of immorality for the sake of conformity, defiance, and existing for others’ benefit without knowing hits incredibly close to home. This game wouldn’t have been objectively worse without a same-sex couple, but the fact that the main couple is one is a layer not just to their relationships with other characters but is built upon by their identities as ‘iterations’, (i guess replicant would be goofy haha) who feel othered and demonized by those around them. It just wouldn’t hit AS hard with a clearly defined male/female relationship. In particular, the escapism and co-dependant hope present in the plane ending is something quite a number of individuals I know who identify with lgbt labels can relate to thinking about many times. Every once in a while it feels like it is us against the world, and the fact that this detail was included was inspired.
I do have a few other issues with some character related things. For example, i really wish we could have had some seen interactions between Fio and his family. I understand why this wasn’t included, but seeing the same name on all the papers rings a little hollow when I have very little context for how their relationship affects Fio. As for Fio, my poor poor boy. I felt sad for this kid the entire game. His optimism is not only admirable but another indicator of him as a ‘failed’ iteration. He’s happy with himself in ways others aren’t happy FOR him to be that way (if that makes sense).
At the center of this is Sofia(?). I need more of Sofia?..end of story. Her speech in many of the endings is a tiny dip into what I thought could have been a super intense and emotional payoff. I haven’t bought the expanded version yet (I probably will though!!) but the peon in me really wants to hear all about her life..though im sure that might destroy some of the mystique.
This game touches on themes like eugenics, child abuse, familial/generational trauma, neglect, and societal/parental expectations. It feels like a lot, and it is, but the game does a pretty good job of making their addition feel natural and not gratuitous. Also, while I certainly expect (but not necessarily relish) some blood and guts in my horror video games, nothing is more irritating when they bring the…ahem.. giant pile of bodies.. out too early; which this game does well (though a certain reveal can come off as less horrifying and more silly the more times you go through it).
Im sure that if i’d had more time, I may play some of the other endings myself. The visual novel aspect makes it easy to consume for those with little patience and skill for puzzles (either by simple controls or playthroughs available around the web).
The people behind this game clearly worked incredibly hard to deliver this soul-gouging (depending on who you are) story, and I’ll absolutely be keeping my eye on the pages of those involved.
Anyway.. no one reads reviews but I wanted to collect my thoughts on this game. If someone finds them useful that’s great! If not, no harm done i hope. Thanks again to the creators and everyone involved in making this ‘suspicious present’! I opened with hesitation and left with much more than I expected. At least this present didn’t need to be dunked in water before opening!
This game really surprised me with its twists, endings and characters, especially Fio. I absolutely ADORE him. I am definitely going to get the extended version of this game in the near future, and I am excited to see what Hatoge releases next.
Love the game! Can you please tell me, what endings exactly are expanded in the paid version, pretty please?^^ and, I wonder, SPOILER ALERT: / / / what was in the drawer? I didn't get it, why did this little thing decide so much in the end? first, I thought it was some bandages for injured Crow in the "escape" ending, so I thought without it he would simply die, like a sad bad end. but it turned out the ending changed into apocalypse!
The extended edition expands on 3 endings; The Hospital ending, The apocalypse ending and the escape ending. (So two of the endings you got already; if you haven't gotten the hospital ending yet, you would have to replay the last day to get it - more on how is in the walkthrough-) The drawer is more symbolic of Crow's final choice between defiance and cooperation. If you ask what the literal object in the drawer is, it's the only object Crow brings out during the final confrontation. I hope this cleared things up a little :)
its upstairs (the room you didnt feel like looking too much at first), and then just walk to the right, you will most likely enter;; i hope you understand :)
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbGD_LT9QRFpC7WMqVtXBGeHgAva32aiI Unfortunately I could not find all of the music that I used on youtube, (or in some cases I could only find a variation of it) and I don't have the rights to upload them myself. If a song you were looking for isn't in this playlist, feel free to ask me about it though :)
If you can play through the game on the mac or linux builds without much issue, I am fine with recordings or streams, however if people run into problems I can't solve them :( Originally there weren't even supposed to be linux and mac builds because of that, but then people with macs started playing the windows version instead which obviously bugged out for them, so I decided to upload the other builds after all.
This is a 17+ horror game, and there is a very prominent content warning screen before you start the game. If you don't like horror games, then perhaps you should look for other games to play. @_wholesomegames on twitter might have some good recommendations for you :)
i have a question, does the prologue count into what endings u get?? like say if i played the game in the prologue but not the rest, would i not get endings 2-5?
You should be able to save from the main menu (which you open by pressing escape on your keyboard) if everything is working as intended. If it's not working, could you please tell me where you're playing? (browser or download for windows/mac/linux)
Hi! I love this game so far (I didn't finish it) but I have an issue. I was playing the browser version, and later when I came back I couldn't get my save to load. I select "keep going" on the main menu and I can see the autosaves and a normal save, but if I click enter or click with my mouse nothing happens. I'm on google chrome if that helps. Can someone help me? Thanks! (Also sorry if my english is bad.)
Aaaa, I forgot to test the autosave plugin in the browser so I didn't realize that it wasn't working for web applications :(( I disabled it and now it should work again, however you will have to replay the parts you've already played, I'm so sorry ;a; Thank you for making me aware of this though!
No plans as of right now, but if I have an idea for a second part that I like enough, I'll consider it. If I start working on something, I'll post about it on twitter @HatogeGames :)
This was so creepy and so good! Glad I sprung for extended edition to make it easier to see all the ends. Took me a few endings to figure out how the choices I made led to the different endings but now that I worked it out I think it makes sense and is a subtle but meaningful way of determining these things. Loved it! Definitely jumped a few times.
This is so...I don't know how to describe it...I can't put it into words but all I know is that. I. AM. HOOKED. I'm highkey invested. they're so precious I wanna cry. Do you have any plans on making a part 2 for this game?
Really good game, i had fun playing it! The only complaint i have is that i couldn't save which was a little bit annoying ( i downloaded the windows version).
This seems to have happened to a few people, but I'm not sure why. I did implement an autosave feature now that should autosave the game at the beginning of the night. If you decide to play the game again, please let me know if this helped. :) (You'll need to redownload the game though)
I'd also like to make one final comment. The game was very confusing due to the lack of instructions. I know there is a help manual but it's tedious to go back to it, or watch the help video. It would be better if the game had natural help for the player already. For example, when Fio said "Go wait in the living room"
That was confusing. I didn't know I had to interact with the table. I had to search up a video on this. A big easy fix is to put a arrow or something to notified the player to do this, to progress with the game. And the spark effect I can BEARLY see. Maybe put an exclamation mark. In a nutshell, the game is lacking natural ingame instructions. But if you'd fix it, the game would end up being REALLY clean without any bumps at all! (Also I hope I didn't end up sounding rude, I just wanted to give you some criticism. TwT and thanks for reading this aaaaaaa.)
On an ending note, I found one bug. When you get the priorities achievement, exit the bathroom you are in, and go to the other bathroom that you haven't used. (either the one upstairs or the one downstairs, it just depends which one you used, but for me it was the downstairs bathroom.)
When you enter, you get ANOTHER priorities achievement, which I'm pretty sure is unintentional, and a mistake.
If you need more help on this bugs detail, ask me!
I've gotten this criticism a few times and I understand where everyone is coming from. I'm used to rpgmaker games being this way, but that doesn't mean it's good game design or that it can't be done better :) I want people to see that rpgmaker games can be cool and modern too after all! ^-^ Also yes, that is a bug. Thank you for notifying me, I'll fix it as soon as I can :)
Great game, but I wanna know if you can give me the download audio file to fio's cute main song, and the scene where Fio gives you ramen music, please!
(I LOVE the music and need it to be in my game! Thanks! <3 OH and happy new years!)
I just got super hooked the second I began playing. The game is so cute! I love cute and creepy mix! I want to squish Fio's cheeks and make him a nice meal and keep him safe </3. I want to see Crow and Fio happy... My first ending was the first one, followed by the 7th ending...and I got a ''priorities'' achievement haha. I jumped a few times lol. I'll purchase it for extra content because I really like the art style and the cute colors and because I'm really curious about the extra endings and additional comics. I didn't even read the tags of this game fully and completely glazed over the '' transgender '' tag. I thought to myself '' what?? where-- did I miss something--'' and then noticed (( SPOILER?)) when Crow looks at himself in the mirror, you can see a binder peeking under his t-shirt. Don't sleep with your binder on btw, it will screw up your ribs and skin elasticity, making it difficult for possible future top surgery. That and also Icarus's/Sofia's sex is Intersex. As a trans guy, I appreciate this kind of rep, I personally hate when representation is shoved/forced onto you like in most media nowadays. This was so simple and subtle and not down your throat I didn't even notice until I re-loaded a save and looked around for clues. I'd love to see more work from you, Hatoge! This game is really great and I hope that you will release more awesome titles like this one in the future! :) Merry late Christmas and a Happy New Year! <3
Thanks! I wanted to keep the representation subtle because I felt that the game had enough other focuses as is. And while I do think that subtle representation is important as well, I respectfully disagree that most trans representation is 'shoved down our throats'. It was the overbearing kind of representation that made me feel less alone before coming out, and I do hope to make other people feel that way someday :) Although if we get to a point as a society where we don't need that kind of representation anymore, I'd be happy with that as well!
I currently have two projects in development which get regularly teased on my twitter @HatogeGames, and there are 2 other games you can already play of me that I published before Sofia? if you'd like to see more of my work :) Either way, thanks for your support and a happy new year!
You didn't upset me, no worries! I don't think we as a community need to agree on everything anyway :'D Some questions in life don't have a wrong or right answer after all.
I played this game, and it took me a while to figure out the phone code (I was trying to do it without using the walkthrough, so I guess that's my fault lol). Overall, this has to be literally the best itch.io games I have ever played. In fact, I made this account so I could comment here and follow the developer! I also played Misfiction (another game made by this brilliant dev), and that was a fun experience as well. I love your work, Hatoge (how do you pronounce that, by the way?). Keep it up! I look forward to literally anything you put on here. Thank you again for this game.
P.S. I love the characters, and we all need a Fio in our lives.

Oh okay thanks a lot :)!
PLEASE! Can someone tell me if you can save your progress? I have lost my progress 3 times already ;-;
You should be able to save through the menu, which can be accessed by pressing escape on your keyboard. Is this not working?
Oh, wait I get it now! Thank you SO much! :D
i do need help, i do what you said but whenever I try to click the save aria or press enter is make a incorrect noise
on which platform are you playing? (Windows/Mac/Linux/Browser)
im playing on windows 10
is this true for all save slots or only the first few? (Some of the saveslots are reserved for auto-save so you cant save on them)

What are the door and dresser combo
I think its 1989 /ᐠ。ꞈ。ᐟ\
What do you do on the second night after you get the flashlight and batteries
how do you get into fios room? plz its been half an hour
its upstairs (the room you didnt feel like looking too much at first), and then just walk to the right, you will most likely enter;; i hope you understand :)
hello, i just finished it and omg
is there a playlist with the ost from this game? istg the music is so good-
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbGD_LT9QRFpC7WMqVtXBGeHgAva32aiI Unfortunately I could not find all of the music that I used on youtube, (or in some cases I could only find a variation of it) and I don't have the rights to upload them myself. If a song you were looking for isn't in this playlist, feel free to ask me about it though :)

" DO NOT stream or record the extended edition, the browser version or the mac and Linux builds."
I would like to know why on the Linux and mac builds the extended build is self explanatory. Is it because they might have bugs?
If you can play through the game on the mac or linux builds without much issue, I am fine with recordings or streams, however if people run into problems I can't solve them :( Originally there weren't even supposed to be linux and mac builds because of that, but then people with macs started playing the windows version instead which obviously bugged out for them, so I decided to upload the other builds after all.
ah, thanks for the reply. I asked because I use Linux. amazing game! thanks for making the Linux build.
I didn't like this game. Why did it have to be a killing spree? Why couldn't it just be a nice, fun game?
This is a 17+ horror game, and there is a very prominent content warning screen before you start the game. If you don't like horror games, then perhaps you should look for other games to play. @_wholesomegames on twitter might have some good recommendations for you :)
how can i change the language
The game hasn't been translated to any other languages than English yet. Which language would you have liked to switch to?
i played english but i would like to play turkish
how do i get the other endings
There is a walkthrough you can download from the main page :)
i have a question, does the prologue count into what endings u get?? like say if i played the game in the prologue but not the rest, would i not get endings 2-5?
Yes, the prologue counts into what endings you get :)
HOW DO YOU SAVE
You should be able to save from the main menu (which you open by pressing escape on your keyboard) if everything is working as intended. If it's not working, could you please tell me where you're playing? (browser or download for windows/mac/linux)
browser on laptop
ilove this so much
Love the game! i said to myself "if fio dies im gonna cry" and im legit crying rn.. good game though i love it!
omg i didnt finish it was all a dream brooooooo
It's ok. Thanks for responding!
will there be a Sofia? 2
No plans as of right now, but if I have an idea for a second part that I like enough, I'll consider it. If I start working on something, I'll post about it on twitter @HatogeGames :)
thank you so much
This was so creepy and so good! Glad I sprung for extended edition to make it easier to see all the ends. Took me a few endings to figure out how the choices I made led to the different endings but now that I worked it out I think it makes sense and is a subtle but meaningful way of determining these things. Loved it! Definitely jumped a few times.
this game is great
is fio a girl or a boy
Fio is nonbinary, but he leans more towards a male identity. :)
That's cute
This is so...I don't know how to describe it...I can't put it into words but all I know is that. I. AM. HOOKED. I'm highkey invested. they're so precious I wanna cry. Do you have any plans on making a part 2 for this game?
Thank you! There are no plans currently, however if I do decide to create another part, I'll post about it on my twitter @HatogeGames :)
im stuck on the second train part nothing happens for like 30 mins
Where are you playing (browser or desktop) which version and on which os?
Really good game, i had fun playing it! The only complaint i have is that i couldn't save which was a little bit annoying ( i downloaded the windows version).
This seems to have happened to a few people, but I'm not sure why. I did implement an autosave feature now that should autosave the game at the beginning of the night. If you decide to play the game again, please let me know if this helped. :) (You'll need to redownload the game though)
I reinstalled the game and it works now! Thank you! :D
Glad to hear!
oh my god this was such a nice and sweet game i think im in love
10/10
!! CRITICISM !!
---------------------------------------------------------------
On an ending note, I found one bug.
You can find all the music I used on maou.audio and playonloop.com :) Should be in the retro and gaming categories
OH MY GOD I FOUND THE TRACKS, I THINK I'M THE HAPPIEST DEVELOPER ALIVE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA THANK YOU!!!!!!!! :D
Also, PLEASE make some kind of 2nd game that cost money. I know that there is a extended version but please. I love this game so much.
I thought to myself '' what?? where-- did I miss something--'' and then noticed (( SPOILER?))
when Crow looks at himself in the mirror, you can see a binder peeking under his t-shirt. :)Merry late Christmas and a Happy New Year! <3
Awesome, I'll definitely have a look!
Sorry if I came off as rude I have trouble wording things right I hope I didn't upset you😭...You didn't upset me, no worries!
Thank you very much, that means a lot! I'm really surprised with how many people enjoy my silly games haha
It's pronounced Hɑːtɒgɛ which is short for 鳩ゲーム (Hato Gēmu, japanese for pigeon game) if that helps!
It does help, thanks! And your games aren't silly, in my opinion. They're actually rather impressive.
